  • Reading Essentials

    Introduction


    This course is Part 1 of two courses designed to help decision makers implement efficient and cost-effective reading programs that will teach nearly all students to read. The content in this course reflects research and implications derived from the fields of cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, perceptual psychology, and related fields. 

    In part 1 of the Reading Essentials course, we will cover determinants of literacy and identify strategies to eliminate illiteracy in schools in low-income countries. 

    By the end of this course, participants will be able to:  

    • Focus on the crucial determinants of reading fluency for various languages and scripts; 
    • Identify strategies for eliminating illiteracy in schools of various low-income countries

    In part 2 of the Reading Essentials course, we will cover evidence-based approaches to teaching reading for low income students.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • Distinguish among pedagogical methods that are more and less effective for teaching literacy to low-income students
    • Understand how to use textbooks to facilitate reading acquisition
    • Understand reading issues in various languages and scripts
